“They Were Just Folk” a direct translation of Orcadian dialect “They Wur Cheust Folk”
the name of Orkney’s Memorial to the Historic Victims of the Witchcraft Trials both
created physically and written through poems to the victims. This phrase makes me feel
the same way now as it did when I first heard it, it is a return to myself and to what it
means to be human. It is a calling to my soul and the innate connection I believe that
weaves us all together. In a time where we seem divided in our humanity more than
ever. I invite you to remember every person persecuted, oppressed, villainised and
murdered because of someone’s inability to see them as wholly human and equal.
Someone’s mother, daughter or sister. Someone’s father, brother or son. Someone’s
lover, their whole entire world. People whose smiles fill up the hearts of those that know
and cherish them. People who light up a room when they enter, class clowns, bedroom
boogiers, the quiet ones who love with their actions, people on the frontline saving lives
and risking their own, people who love to garden or feel sand on their feet. Those that
collect stamps, organise community projects, pick up their neighbours shopping or stop
to chat in their local shops. Just Folk, with the woven stories, memories and feelings of a
person living a life just like you or I.”
